PROJECT

Where Design Begins Long Before the Furniture is Made

People often see the finished sofa. They admire the craftsmanship, the stitching, the proportions and the comfort.

What they don’t always see is where good furniture really begins.

Several years ago, Newman & Bright was invited to participate in the design development of a furniture collection inspired by the remarkable archives of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.

It proved to be one of the most fascinating projects we have ever been involved with.

Rather than beginning with fabric samples or timber, the project began with history.
Our research explored centuries of British and European furniture design, museum archives, architecture and decorative arts. Each proposed collection was built around a story.

Four Stories. Four Distinct Collections.

Archives collection moodboard

ARCHIVES

Celebrated Britain’s upholstery heritage and traditional craftsmanship.

French Salon collection moodboard

FRENCH SALON

Reinterpreted elegant eighteenth-century interiors for modern homes.

Hipster collection moodboard

HIPSTER

Looked at the bold optimism of the 1970s through contemporary furniture design.

The Parlour collection moodboard

THE PARLOUR

Celebrated the importance of beautifully proportioned occasional furniture inspired by Victorian reception rooms.

From Archive to Contemporary

The challenge wasn’t to reproduce antique furniture.

It was to understand why great furniture has endured for generations, then reinterpret those ideas for contemporary interiors.

Months were spent developing concepts, proportions, detailing and complete furniture collections.

Understanding history

Respecting craftsmanship

Designed to endure

Made with purpose

A philosophy that shapes everything we do.

Although the project ultimately followed a different commercial direction, the experience became an invaluable part of Newman & Bright’s own design philosophy.

Beautiful furniture is never created by chance.
It comes from understanding history, respecting craftsmanship and designing furniture that will remain relevant long after fashions have passed.

That same philosophy continues to shape every collection we produce today—
from our Art Deco furniture to our bespoke Chesterfields and contemporary designs.

Every project teaches us something.
This one reminded us that the best furniture always tells a story.
