Our History
The former Neumann Leathers workshops at 39 Derby Street, Manchester
In 1939, amidst the turbulent times of the German occupation, Philip Neumann the founder of Neumann Leathers, together with three of his children, found refuge in the city of Manchester, UK.
The Neumann family re-established their company in Manchester. The business, begun in 1879 continued specialising in leather hides for the shoe & furniture industries and brought them them to the forefront of the European leather trade.Â
Furniture Manufacturing
Today, under the capable stewardship of the third-generation owner, Sam Neumann, the company has expanded its horizons. Building upon the family’s deep-rooted knowledge of leather, Sam ventured into the world of furniture manufacturing.

This was a natural progression – a fitting addition from the leather trade to the crafting of high-quality leather seating. The expertise passed down through the generations continues to be associated with the highest levels of service and expertise in UK manufacturing. Our commitment to quality and customer service, driven by the legacy of Philip Neumann, endures as we embark on new journeys, seeking to provide the world with the finest leather and furniture solutions.
Bespoke Sofa Manufacturer
Our two small workshops are staffed by time-served craftsmen and our models are made from locally sourced fillings and hardwood timber frames. As one of the few remaining bespoke sofa manufacturers in the North West, we can tailor our sofas to our customers’ needs and are small enough to give genuine care and attention to individual orders. For example, if the standard model doesn’t fit, we can adjust dimensions, change fillings and trim, or even alter the design. We likewise offer customers a complete after sales service to ensure they are completely satisfied with what we have sent them.
Unique Art Deco Designs
We have recently designed and developed our own unique models based around the most popular design movements of the last 100 years – that of Art Deco and Art Nouveau.

Because we serve our customers directly, we can guarantee a superior quality product at some of the lowest prices in the industry. Most of our models can be made for delivery within 6-7 weeks (with Art Deco at 10-12 weeks) and our frames and materials come with a complete 5-year guarantee.
In order to bring customers a wider choice of models, we have over many years partnered with a high-end factory in Italy in offering the most up to date European style designs.

We have over 100 years’ experience in the leather trade via our sister company, Neumann Leathers and can provide comprehensive advice as to what would be best for any particular job. We supply some of the finest leathers in Europe and can offer a wide variety of colours, textures and finishes.
For those who prefer a fabric finish, we likewise have access to a large range of high quality upholstery fabrics – from chenilles to velvets – sourced from some of the best UK suppliers.
Bespoke Made
We are adaptable and make our sofas according to our customer’s needs. So, if the standard model doesn’t fit, we can adjust depth, height and width, and adjust fillings and trim, and even alter the design as required. We ensure every aspect of the model selected is explained in detail to our customers so they know exactly what they will be getting as a finished product.
We can even use our design team to create something unique – we are one of the only workshops that make one-off products to cater for something different from the run-of-the mill designs.

We use only locally sourced hardwood frames, foams and springs – all of a tested high quality and guaranteed for 5 years. For our commercial customers, our materials, both leather and fabric, come with Crib 5 fire retardant certification.
